Description

Mac OS X Support Essentials is a three-day, hands-on course that provides an in-depth exploration of troubleshooting on Mac OS X. This course is designed to give you a tour of the breadth of functionality of Mac OS X and the best methods for effectively supporting users of Mac OS X systems. The course is a combination of lectures and hands-on case study exercises that provide practical real-world experience.

Chapter 1 - Installation

  • Prepare and partition the drive, install Mac OS X, use the installer log files to verify a successful installation, configure Mac OS X with the Setup Assistant, update software with Software Update and Installer, tips and techniques for troubleshooting an installation problem

Chapter 2 - User Accounts

  • Create and manage user accounts, create and manage administrator accounts, locate directory attributes, security, password selection, Keychain, and FileVault

Chapter 3 - File Systems

  • File systems supported by Mac OS X, file and directory ownership and permissions, Disk Utility and file repair, using the command line for file management

Chapter 4 - File Management

  • The root volume, file system layout, preferences, frameworks, file types unique to Mac OS X (i.e., resource forks and packages), Spotlight, file archives, disk images. archiving and restoring data with Time Machine, managing backup data, how to access the data outside of Time Machine

Chapter 5 - Applications

  • Applications supported in Mac OS X, applications created with different developer APIs, the UNIX concept of a process, the relationship of processes and applications, tools to monitoring and managing processes, application preferences, troubleshooting, Boot Camp

Chapter 6 - Network Configuration

  • Basic networking configuration, TCP/IP networking, Ethernet, AirPort, multiple network connections, appropriate use of network locations, isolating and troubleshooting network elements

Chapter 7 - Accessing Network Services

  • Connecting to common network resources, Network Users accounts with Directory Services, AFP, SMB, SSH, FTP, and WebDAV connections, Bonjour, NetBIOS, the network browser, isolating client software issues from network issues

Chapter 8 - Providing Network Services

  • Enabling network services on a Mac OS X client, peer-to-peer collaboration, sharing files between Macs and Windows, sharing web documents, screen sharing, firewall as well as techniques to isolate server issues from client and network issues

Chapter 9 - Peripherals

  • Connecting peripherals to a Mac, cabling, connections, device drivers for common peripherals, managing printers, print-job management, printer PPDs and PDF workflow, techniques for isolating cabling, driver, or application issues

Chapter 10 - Startup Process

  • Troubleshooting boot issues with a Mac at startup, phases of the startup process, which part of the system is active during each phase, issues that can arise, automatic process launching with launchd and login window startup items

Description

Mac OS X Server Essentials is a three-day, hands-on course that provides an in-depth exploration of troubleshooting on Mac OS X. This course is designed to give you a tour of the breadth of functionality of Mac OS X and the best methods for effectively supporting users of Mac OS X systems. The course is a combination of lectures and hands-on case study exercises that provide practical real-world experience.

Chapter 1 - Installation & Configuration

  • Installation, initial configuration, server administration tools, and troubleshooting installation issues

Chapter 2 - Providing DNS Service

  • Configuring Mac OS X Server to provide basic DNS service

Chapter 3 - Authentication, Authorization, and Access Control

  • Creating and administering accounts, controlling access (ACLs), and troubleshooting

Chapter 4 - Open Directory

  • Configuring Open Directory, single sign-on, backing up directory data, troubleshooting Open Directory, and an introduction to Kerberos

Chapter 5 - File Services

  • Configuring and troubleshooting Apple File Service, share points for Windows users, NFS, network mounts, and FTP; case sensitivity issues

Chapter 6 - Mail Service

  • Configuring, maintaining and troubleshooting email service

Chapter 7 - Web Service

  • Hosting multiple web sites on a single server, providing WebDAV access to files

Chapter 8- Collaborative Services

  • Setting up and configuring wikis and blogs, and the iChat and iCal services to assist people working together

Chapter 9- Open Directory

  • Configuring and troubleshooting NetBoot/Network Install to deploy Mac OS X

Chapter 10- Managing Accounts

  • Managed accounts, preference management, managed network browsing, mobile accounts, troubleshooting account management

  • A hands-on exercise to verify what students have learned

Course Outline | Mac OS X Directory Services v10.5 — 301

Description

This four-day course focuses on both Mac OS X as a directory service client, and Mac OS X Server as a directory server. Cross platform solutions are emphasized in both instances. In working with Mac OS X, students learn how to use network accounts and Kerberos authentication with any common directory service, such as Apple's Open Directory, Microsoft's Active Directory, or an industry-standard LDAP server.

In working with Mac OS X Server, students learn how to run a robust, scalable directory system using Apple's Open Directory server. Students also learn how to use Mac OS X Server to augment an existing directory service infrastructure. The course is a combination of lecture and hands-on case study exercises that provide practical real-world experience.


Audience

This course is designed for system administrators and IT professionals who need to gain specific knowledge about directory services, how to effectively configure Mac OS X computers to access directory services, and configure Mac OS X Server to provide directory services in a mixed-platform environment.

Prerequisites

Students should have the following prerequisite knowledge prior to attending the course:

  • Basic troubleshooting experience or Mac OS X Support Essentials v10.5
  • Basic Mac OS X Server experience or Mac OS X Server Essentials v10.5
  • Understanding of basic IP networking, including IP address, subnet masks, ports, and protocols
  • Experience using the command-line interface with Mac OS X

Instructor

Rich Baim

An Adobe Certified Instructor for Adobe Premiere Pro with over twenty years of video editing experience. Rich has a Master of Science degree in Instructional Media and was one of the beta testers for Premiere Pro 1.5. He currently works in the eLearning department at a technology center and specializes in streaming media for health education. Rich emphasizes real-world problem solving and provides "hands-on" experiences for students.

Margaret A. Gaeddert

Margaret "Margee" Gaeddert, is a certified professional designer and owner of G Art & Design in Oklahoma City. A 30 year career in design as an art director, graphic designer, illustrator, and web designer has awarded her regional, national and international awards. She has worked with Fortune 500 and 1000 corporations such as AOL, Avon, Bristol-Myers Squibb Co, Sony Music, CNBC.com and Gucci. Local corporations include American Fidelity, KOCO Television, Metropolitan Library Association and Sperry Van Ness. She teaches design at the University of Central Oklahoma. Gaeddert enjoys serving on the board of the Oklahoma Watercolor Association, and two design advisory boards supporting education in Oklahoma. She holds a bachelor's of fine arts degree and is an accomplished award winning fine artist in watercolor media, calligraphy and caricature art.

Jason Gaines

Mr. Gaines is a certified professional in both Logic Pro 8 and Soundtrack 2. He is currently in demand as an instructor of both applications. Current projects include independent film work and collaboration on the television series, LA Ink. Jason Gaines is a New York City based trumpeter, composer and arranger. He has performed and recorded with some of the most influential performers in the jazz idiom including Arturo Sandoval, Roy Hargrove, Joshua Redman, Freddie Hubbard, Jackie McLean, Gerald Wilson and others. He holds degrees from Manhattan School of Music, New York University and Teachers College, Columbia University.

Doug Hanley

Doug Hanley is a Mac support veteran of over 16 years and a user group founder. He is the President of MacTEK Consulting & Training, Inc., a computer consulting firm and Apple Authorized Training Center in Las Vegas. Rick Allen Lippert

Rick Allen Lippert is president of Lippert Media in Oklahoma City with 30 years experience on both sides of the camera. Specializing in industrial production, he has won numerous awards for his writing, producing, and directing for clients such as the Oklahoma Arts Institute, Oklahoma City University, the City of Oklahoma City, the University of Central Oklahoma, the U.S. Coast Guard, the U.S. Department of Transportation and the Federal Aviation Administration.His commercial clients include CompSource Oklahoma and Dane Design. Rick has been using Final Cut Pro since version 1.25. As an adjunct instructor, he teaches video production at Oklahoma City Community College and media writing at the University of Oklahoma.

Kiri Roberts

Kiri Christopher Roberts is the creative director of One Media USA, a media production house located in Albany, NY. Born in Zimbabwe, Kiri migrated to the UK where he received a Masters in Audio Production from the University of Westminster in London. With a diverse international experience he has worked on music production, TV commercials, documentary films, music videos and currently ‘Frozen River’ the movie. Kiri is also a contributing writer for the Edit-Well magazine whose editor is Larry Jordan of LA. Kiri balances his time between his business and as a trainer for Apple Pro Apps. He is an Apple Certified end user and trainer for Motion 3, FCP6, STP2 & Logic 8.

Luisa Winters

Luisa Winters has been in the professional videography industry for 17 years. An awards winning videographer / editor, her tips make editing and compositing more productive, faster, and far more inventive. Luisa is a featured instructor for NAB, Government Video Expo, DV Expo, CES, NAB - NY and PMA. An accomplished videographer, editor, 3D animator and graphics designer, her compositions have been seen on broadcast TV as well as in private video productions. She has created and edited scores of video and web projects for dozens of corporate, government, and educational, commercial and private clients. Luisa has conducted training sessions and master classes for Adobe After Effects, Photoshop, Premiere Pro, Flash and Encore DVD. Luisa is a Johns Hopkins University Graduate and is fluent in both English and Spanish.
